  • Adolescent Groups | EMERGE CENTER

Adolescents grow in groups. While individual therapy offers teens a private and focused hour that can be extremely beneficial, it cannot offer the kind of social experience that teens can benefit from in groups. Group therapy is experiential learning of a social and emotional nature. As a result, group therapy has several advantages over individual therapy. ADOLESCENT GROUPS We have several open-ended, interpersonal therapy groups to help members connect with each other and communicate more honestly. As trust grows, members develop a space where they can be themselves and relate more authentically. This leads to a stronger sense of identity, greater social confidence and an increased feeling of belonging in the world, which can have positive effects on many areas of life. Groups have 5-7 members and are separated by grade levels of 2-3 years. As teen groups evolve, these specific groups and times may change but are currently: 9th/10th grade - Mondays, 6pm-7pm (1 opening) 10th/11th grade - Mondays, 4:30-5:30pm (2 openings) 9th/10th grade (neurodivergent) - Thursdays, 4-5pm (1 opening) 8th/9th grade (neurodivergent), day/time TBA (now forming) Groups meet for one hour per week and cost $50. Medi-Cal accepted and reduced fees are available. To learn more, review the presentation below. For additional information, contact us . Six Reasons Group Therapy Is a Great Choice for Teens Research shows a 73% improvement for teens in group therapy Hoag, Matthew & Burlingame, Gary. (1997). Evaluating the Effectiveness of Child and Adolescent Group Treatment: A Meta-Analytic Review. Journal of clinical child psychology. 26. 234-46. 10.1207/s15374424jccp2603_2. Adolescents grow in groups. While individual therapy offers teens a private and focused hour that can be extremely beneficial, it cannot offer the kind of social experience that teens can benefit from in groups. Group therapy is experiential learning of a social and emotional nature. As a result, group therapy has several advantages over individual therapy: 1. Confidence - Groups help teens with issues of confidence by giving them the opportunity to create positive relationships with their peers. Feeling like a valued part of a peer group and being accepted for oneself has enormous benefits in helping teens develop inner and outer (social) confidence. 2. Feedback - Adolescents tune into each other and value feedback from their peers differently than from adults. Hearing the same feedback from a group of valued peers reinforces the effect of this feedback and leads to changes in thinking and behavior. 3. Sharing - Adolescents share certain issues with their peers more than they would with an individual adult therapist. Since the opposite is true as well, there are great benefits from combining both individual and group therapy. 4. Corrective Social Experience - When teens have had social difficulties and trauma--such as bullying or exclusion-- groups can provide a corrective social experience to heal these pains and create new experiences in their wake. 5. Relational Skills Development - No one teaches teens to relate honestly and effectively with peers. They learn it through a vast amount of trial and error, often engaging in problematic patterns for a long time before they figure it out. Group therapy provides a model for open and honest communication, as well as a setting to practice these relational skills that will transfer over to all relationships in their lives. 6. Identity Development - Issues of identity are more central during adolescence than at any other time of life. Identity does not form in a vacuum, but through experiences with others who reflect back who we are. Group therapy facilitates identity development by offering teens an experience of being seen and known by their peers. GROUP AGREEMENT The Group Agreement is an important part of the therapeutic work. Members must agree to a few conditions in order to work effectively together and benefit from the group. • Insurance | EMERGE CENTER

EMERGE is seeking team members to provide psychotherapy and other activities that support the social and emotional growth of adolescents and young adults. ການເປີດວຽກ At the present time, we do not accept any insurance directly. If you would like a statement to send to your insurance for out-of-network reimbursement, please let your therapist know. You are responsible for checking your insurance to see if it covers your therapist and therapy. Please be aware that associate therapists are often not covered by insurance. Why We Don’t Accept Health Insurance While we understand it can be difficult to find a mental health provider through insurance, we are sadly unable to accept it. There are many reason for this and we have attempted to explain them below: 1. Administrative Burdens Accepting insurance involves a significant amount of time on administrative work rather than on patient care. Navigating pre-authorization requirements, handling claims, and dealing with reimbursement delays require extensive documentation and frequent communication with insurance companies. Opting out of insurance networks reduces these administrative demands, allowing us to allocate more time and focus to client care. 2. Control Over Treatment In-network insurance companies often dictate certain aspects of care, including types of treatment covered, frequency of sessions, and duration of coverage. This can limit our ability to fully customize treatment plans to each clients needs. Opting out of insurance networks allows us more flexibilty in choosing the treatment approach that best suits each patient’s goals and timelines, leading to a more personalized and effective care experience. 3. Sustainable Economics Insurance reimbursement rates for mental health providers tend to be significantly lower compared to other medical specialties. Many therapists find that the rates offered by insurance companies do not align with the overhead and resources necessary to maintain a high-quality practice. Operating outside of insurance networks can create a more sustainable business model, allowing us to provide a high standard of care without the financial strain. 4. Improved Quality of Care Seeing fewer patients and spending more time with each one often leads to higher quality interactions. By not accepting insurance, we can schedule fewer clients and improve our focus on our clients. We can also schedule longer or more frequent sessions without being restricted by insurance billing codes or pressured to meet high quotas. 5. Transparency in Pricing Insurance billing can sometimes be complex and opaque, leading to unexpected costs or “surprise bills” for patients. Opting out of insurance networks allows us to offer straightforward, transparent pricing where patients know exactly what they’re paying for. This upfront pricing can foster a stronger, trust-based relationship, as both parties are clear on financial terms from the beginning. 6. Privacy Concerns Privacy concerns are particularly relevant in mental health care. When using insurance, mental health treatment often requires a formal diagnosis that goes on the patient’s medical record. Insurance companies may review records and demand changes to treatment based on limited information. Opting out of insurance allows us to maintain a higher level of privacy for patients who may be uncomfortable sharing details of their treatment with insurers. Conclusion: A Patient-Centered Approach, Not a Public Health Solution While there are many reasons we don’t accept insurance, we realize it can create barriers to care for many patients. The initial out-of-pocket costs may be prohibitive, limiting access for individuals who cannot afford private pay services. This can exacerbate disparities in mental health care, as those without financial resources or adequate insurance coverage may struggle to receive necessary treatment. Additionally, navigating reimbursement through out-of-network benefits can be complex and burdensome for patients. While our hope is for a broad based, public health solution to this issue, it is unfortunately too complex and difficult for us to take on as a small mental health practice. However, we have attempted to make therapy more affordable through the following: • Hiring therapists at varying experience levels that charge different rates. • Offered reduced fee services whenever possible. • Accepting payments through the EAP program for DJUSD and YCOE. • Providing a variety of therapy and support groups. • Providing pro-bono group therapy to adolescent Medi-Cal recipients. • Offer free workshops and groups at various times throughout the year. • Providing reduced fees for group therapy. If you are interested in learning more about this issue, here is a story on NPR of why some therapists have left insurance as they face many of the same issues as we do. e ·ລວມເຂົ້າກັນ / əˈmərj / ຄຳ ກິລິຍາ ທີ່ຈະກາຍເປັນປາກົດຂື້ນ, ທີ່ສໍາຄັນຫຼືເປັນຄູຊັດເຈນ

If adolescence is the most turbulent time of childhood, then it is surely the most turbulent time of parenting. The teenage years are marked by rapid changes in physical and emotional development and increased risk for nearly everything. PARENT GROUPS Parenting can be a complicated and emotionally draining experience even for the best among us. Support groups are a rich opportunity to connect with others that share your parenting experiences, but also with those who are experiencing different challenges. Connecting with others can be healing no matter what the circumstances. Our groups facilitate sharing of feelings, discussion of challenges, problem solving and general support as follows: Support – Open-ended discussion of parenting concerns, challenges and emotional issues. Focus is on helping members express themselves, connect with each other and feel less alone. Counseling – A variety of counseling strategies are used to help members identify and work on barriers that prevent them from being the parent they would like to be. Education – Leader will share information about current research and best practices related to parenting adolescents, while maintaining a viewpoint that there is no one right way to parent. Parent groups include: Parents of Young Adults - 4th Wednesday each month, 7pm-8pm, Zoom (1 opening) Parents of Adolescents with OCD - now forming, please inquire Davis High School Parent Group - Wednesdays, 12-1pm, EMERGE office, starts April 16th 2025 Chavez Elementary Parent Group - every Wednesday, 8:30-9:30am, Chavez Elementary School For more information on our groups, contact us .

Children Young children express themselves in a variety of ways, such as words, art, drama, games and play. We work with children ages 3-11 using all of these mediums with specialized materials such as sandtrays, puppets, art supplies, games, masks and costumes. Words are also used as we work toward helping children verbalize and interpret their feelings and thoughts. Therapists at EMERGE that work with children have additional training and receive specialized supervision in this unique form of therapy. Because therapy with children requires many materials and a variety of communication formats, it is highly recommended that therapy be provided in person rather than remotely. Adolescents Therapy for adolescents varies greatly based on age, development, motivation and concerns. As a mix of child and adult therapy, it often involves some mix of activity and talk. Therapists working with teens need additional training and support as there are complex issues that emerge during these years, including the onset of mental health issues, substance use, screen addictions, reckless behavior, eating disorders, self-harm, OCD, anxiety, depression and suicidality. Since teens are often uncomfortable talking with adults, it is critical that therapists are authentic, attuned and genuinely enjoy working with them. As a result, therapy with adolescents may be the most complex of all as it must take into account all of these variables. Emerging Adults Adults from 18-29 are still in formative stages of development, enjoying new freedoms but also new responsibilities. In this time of life, it is important that therapists understand the nature of the issues presented, but also the unique period in which these issues are occurring. Individual therapy is generally the treatment of choice, but group therapy can have many benefits in helping emerging adults feel less alone in their struggles. Adults/Couples Adults seeking therapy have many options since they are generally motivated to work on their issues. As the age range is wide and encompasses decades of past experiences, there may be numerous issues to work on at the same time. As a result, it is important for the therapist and client to be clear on goals for therapy, to agree on the therapeutic approach used and to maintain clear and open feedback to assess benefits. When relationship issues are the main concern, adults may want to consider couples, family and/or group therapy. Families We integrate family therapy in our work with children and adolescents from the start, consulting with the family before therapy begins and at key points throughout the process. If family dynamics are problematic, addressing them directly with the family is often more effective than spending numerous sessions helping the child/teen to cope with them. Conversely, families bring many strengths that can be helpful to a child/teen in dealing with a variety of issues in and outside the home. With unmotivated children and teens, family therapy is often the treatment of choice to address matters that may be of greater concern to parents than the child or teen. We may work with the entire family together or with subgroups of family members depending on the issues. We may also use family therapy with adult family members wishing to resolve longstanding issues or strengthen bonds. The teenage years are marked by rapid changes in physical and emotional development and increased risk for nearly everything. PARENT TRAINING The following trainings for parents were conducted for the DJUSD Parent Empowerment Program and can be accessed via the DJUSD website (link below). SCREEN ADDICTIONS DJUSD Parent Empowerment Program December 2024 For many children and teens, screen use can mimic patterns of drug addiction and create difficulties associated with addictions, such as lying, stealing, pleading, threatening and erupting in anger. When parents attempt to limit screen use, they may face enormous challenges with no easy answers. This PEP Talk discussed the growing prevalence of screen addictions and strategies parents can use to address these issues and live more harmoniously. Watch PERFECTIONISM IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS DJUSD Parent Empowerment Program October 2024 Perfectionism can be a force for success and achievement, but it can also lead to high stress levels, strained relationships and burnout. Characterized by unrealistic standards and harsh inner criticism, perfectionism contributes to many psychological conditions, including depression, anxiety, self-harm and eating disorders. Often starting in childhood, perfectionism appears to be on the rise in the United States. This workshop covered what perfectionism is, how it can sabatoge success and what parents can do to help their perfectionistic children. Watch BLENDING MODERN AND TRADITIONAL PARENTING DJUSD Parent Empowerment Program May 2024 Modern parenting is a relatively recent development that is marked by a child-centered, emotion-focused and process-oriented approach. Traditional parenting has a long legacy and is family-centered, behavior-focused and responsibility-oriented. This workshop explored the benefits and challenges of both approaches and discuss strategies for blending these two styles of parenting. Watch
